Title: Metabolism

1
Metabolism
  • Chapter 14

2
The Main Function of Metabolism
  • Metabolism What is it?
  • Homeostasis To maintain
  • this, the body regulates its
  • systems to avoid dangerous
  • lacks or excesses.
  • Ex. You breathe to take in oxygen and
  • expel carbon dioxide

3
The Metabolic Process
  • Four Conditions
  • Chemical balance body needs the
  • right balance of nutrients and
  • other substances.
  • Just like a car needs hydrogen and
  • carbon to run.

4
  • 2. Oxygen many metabolic
  • processes require oxygen
  • to take place (breathing)
  • It is like burning of gasoline
  • that make an engine run.

5
  • 3. Temperature an organisms body
  • temperature must be within a
  • certain range.
  • A car wont start if its temp. is too low.

6
  • 4. Removal of waste products
  • the waste products of metabolism
  • are water and carbon dioxide.
  • Carried in the blood to the lungs
  • where you exhale them.
  • Exhaust system to rid water
  • vapor and carbon monoxide.

7
Energy for Metabolism
  • During metabolism, energy is both
  • used and produced.
  • Energy originates from the sun.
  • Plants trap energy.
  • Humans eat the plant, they gain nutrients
  • which provide energy for metabolism.

8
  • Three nutrients that produce energy.
  • What are the nutrients?

9
  • 1. Carbohydrates
  • -bodys preferred source
  • of energy.
  • -quickly broken down into
  • simple sugars.
  • -some reserved as Glycogen.
  • -remaining are converted to fat.

10
  • Fats
  • - in diet are stored in fat tissue
  • until needed for energy.

11
  • Proteins
  • -mainly used to build the bodys
  • own protein.
  • -excess converted to fat
