14Research Results
A 1999 U.S. Dept. of Education study shows that
students who take hard courses in high school, no
matter how well they do, are more likely to
finish college than students with good high
school grades and SAT scores who skip the most
demanding classes. Jay Mathews, Washington Post,
Dec.6, 2001
15Study Shows IB Standards Match College Knowledge
and Skills Requirements
- We have learned that its not enough for
students to study content in isolation they must
use their content knowledge to solve problems,
make conjectures and inferences, and think deeply
about the big questions of the disciplines. IB
standards seem to be particularly well suited to
achieving these aims. - -- David Conley, CEO for EPIC
- (Educational Policy
Improvement Center)
16College Admission Criteria
- Rigorous curriculum, as well as the grades earned
in these courses - Personal essay
- College Admission Tests (SAT/ACT)
- Community service/extracurricular activities
(both on campus and off campus) - Letters of recommendation
- GPA/class rank
17Some College Admission Assumptions
- Nearly all courses in the students final two
years are in solid academic areas. - An admissions officer can be assured of the
candidates strong preparation of course work in
the five basic academic areas first language,
second language, social science/humanities,
natural/physical sciences, and mathematics.
18IB Advantages
- The Extended Essay requirement validates writing
and research skills. - Participation in the IB demonstrates that the
student accepts rather than avoids rigorous
academic challenges. - Participation in the IB strengthens a students
confidence, social sophistication, and poise.
19As of Fall 2006, TEXAS IB Graduates get College
