Title: Organic Chemistry Laboratory Notebook Maintenance
1Organic Chemistry Laboratory Notebook Maintenance
2Before coming to class
- Complete PRE-LAB assignment section of laboratory
notebook. - Remember, without a COMPLETE PRE-LAB assignment,
you will not be allowed to do experiment!
3Step 1 Complete Information at top of page

4Step 2 Objectives
- Always include a header.
- Give brief description of what you are attempting
to do and how you are going to do it.
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship
between molecular structure, intermolecular
forces and solubility of various organic and
aqueous solvents using solubility testing.
5Step 3 Chemical Reaction and Reaction Table
- CH3CH2CH2CH2OH NaBr H? CH3CH2CH2CH2Br H2O
- Do not write mechanism here
- Some experiments do not call for the preparation
of a compound. In those cases, you can skip to
the next section.
Chemical Name 1-butanol Sodium bromide 1-bromobutane
Molecular weight 74.12 mg/ mmol 102.894 mg/mmol 137.03 mg/ mmol
Mass 0.567 g 1.0 g 1.05 g
mmol 7.65 mmol 9.72 mmol 7.65 mmol
Equivalents 1 1.27 1
Density 0.81 g/ml  1.27 g/ml
volume 0.7 mL Â 0.827 mL
6Step 4 Table of Physical Data
- Prepare a single, organized table including
physical constants and hazards for all chemicals
in list as instructed. - Physical data is available from MSDS sheets!
- WIKIPEDIA IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE SOURCE!
7Step 4 Finding Physical Data
- Can use one of two sites
- http//hazard.com/msds
- http//www.chemexper.com/
8Step 5Separation Scheme
- Show, by means of a flow chart, how the desired
product is to be separated from the reaction
mixture (i.e. solvents, excess starting
materials, and unwanted side products). - Be specific, but not overly detailed
- Some experiments do not call for the separation
or purification of a compound. In those cases,
you can skip to the next section
9Step 5Separation Scheme
10Step 6 Procedure
- Write a concise version of the experimental
procedure in your lab book (summarize) - Include sketches and label parts of any apparatus
that is being used for the first time. - Do not spend too much time here.
11Step 7 Day of lab
- Your instructor will initial the pre-lab portion
of your lab notebook prior to the lab briefing. - Without a COMPLETE pre-lab, you will NOT be
allowed to perform the experiment.
12Step 8 During the lab
- write down any relevant observations that you
make and any changes to the published material. - Write information down in blue or black ink
directly in notebook as you do it, not after you
leave the room!
13Step 8 Example
Data and Observations wt of salicylic acid
paper 2.43 g wt of paper 0.43 g salicylic acid
2.00 g 1) On mixing, it took a few minutes for
everything to go into solution. The addition of
sulfuric acid caused some fizzing. 2) Heated for
about 15 min instead of the planned 10 min. 3)
After adding the water and cooling, no crystals
appeared. On the suggestion of my Instructor, I
scratched the flask with a glass rod, chilled it
on ice for 10 more min, and finally a lot of
slightly tan crystals appeared. 4) Quite a lot of
solid, lightly tan, was collected on the filter
paper 5) Let dry for 10 min. crude product
watchglass 32.02 g watchglass 30.10 g crude
product 1.92 g yield of crude pr oduct 1.92
g/2.52 g 76
14Step 8 After the lab
- Remove the YELLOW lab notebook pages containing
all pre-lab and in-lab entries for the experiment
and attach them to your FINAL LAB REPORT for
grading.
