Title: Halloween

1
Halloween
2
Where does Halloween come from?
  • Halloween began as an ancient Celtic festival in
Great Britain and Ireland, and has survived most
strongly among Irish, Scottish and Welsh
    communities. Immigrants from these communities
carried the tradition to North America where it
    has gained in popularity

3
What is the origin of the word Halloween?
  • The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th
century and represents a Scottish variant of the
fuller All-Hallows-Even that is, the night before
    All Hallows.

4
When is Halloween celebrated?
  • Its celebrated on October 31st
  • Celebrated in U.S.A and north Mexico

5
Name some Halloweeen traditions?
  • Halloween costumes are traditionally modeled
after supernatural figures such as monsters,
ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils. Over
time, the costume selection extended to include
popular characters from fiction, celebrities, and
generic archetypes such as ninjas and princesses.

6
What is a Jack-o-lantern?
  • In a distant Halloween night, a rowdy reputation
for drunken Irishman named Jack, had the
misfortune to meet with the devil in a tavern.
Despite the alcohol ingested, Jack was able to
fool the devil offering his soul in exchange for
one last drink. The devil was transformed into a
coin to pay the waiter, but cheap-Jack-fed
quickly took it and put it in her purse (which
was engraved with a cross), so the devil could
not return to its original form and not Jack let
him go until he promised not to ask for your soul
in 10 years. The devil had no choice but to grant
    his claim.
  • Now children remember him making a moster face
using a pumpking and putting a candle inside.

7
What is trick or treat?
  • Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for
children on Halloween. Children go in costume
from house to house, asking for treats such as
candy or sometimes money, with the question,
"Trick or treat?" The word "trick" refers to a
(mostly idle) "threat" to perform mischief on the
homeowners or their property if no treat is
given. In some parts of Scotland children still
go guising. In this custom the child performs
some sort of trick, i.e. sings a song or tells a
ghost story, to earn their treats.

Explain a game played In Halloween
  • One common game is dunking or apple bobbing, in
which apples float in a tub or a large basin of
water and the participants must use their teeth
to remove an apple from the basin.
  • A variant of dunking involves kneeling on a
chair, holding a fork between the teeth and
trying to drop the fork into an apple.
  • Another common game involves hanging up treacle
or syrup-coated scones by strings these must be
eaten without using hands while they remain
attached to the string, an activity that
inevitably leads to a very sticky facen
