Title: This is Rotary

1
Be Selfish Help Save Civilisation
Support CarbonAct Now
2
Key Facts
  • Fossil fuels are disappearing
  • They are in unreliable hands
  • The temperature is rising
  • And so is the sea level
  • We (in the UK) are consuming yearly 3x the
    Earths annual yield

3
Life Jim, but not as we Know it
  • The Earth will probably find a way forward itself
  • Civilisation as we know it will disappear
  • This will happen in our grandchildrens lifetime

4
Is it selfish?
  • Acting now
  • To protect your family?
  • To protect - and benefit - your Business?

5
Threat or Opportunity?
  • Opportunity, because although a change in the
way we live our lives is required
  • Our Grandchildren's future will be more secure
  • The development of low carbon technologies will
    be accelerated.

6
Quality of Life
  • As Quality is measured by the value added to
society by the products and services we create
  • Quality of Life in the future will be measured by
what we conserve rather than what we consume

7
The time to act is now
  • The rescue ship in the form of renewables is not
    going to arrive anytime now
  • We have to conserve rations and start harvesting
    the resources to hand

8
Individually and together
  • We share this planet and must act together
  • Governments must be made to face up to the
challenges or they wont be decisive
  • Our grandchildren wont forgive us for continued
over-use of resources to their loss

9
Conserving rations
  • Invest in your grandchildren by
  • Making easily attainable reductions in energy use
    now
  • Changing to a green electricity tariff
  • Continued..

10
A Carbon Offset Scheme
  • Support a Rotary Carbon Offset Scheme
  • To demonstrate commitment to change
  • To enable others to move to a low carbon future
  • To give Rotary the authority to lobby for change

11
Plan for further change
  • Starting planning for significant further
    reductions in carbon use soon
  • Be selfish start saving Civilisation now

12
Dont let the future be a matter of luck!
When Rotary has the power to change it in our
Second Century Power NUMBERSUNITY CarbonAct
Now
13
Plan for further change
  • Climate processes, feedbacks and their timescales
imply that anthropogenic warming and sea level
rise would continue for centuries even if
greenhouse gas concentrations were to be
    stabilised.
  • Draft 4th IPPC Report

14
Plan for further change
  • ........However all in all, most would appear
to to agree that peak oil output is not very far
away for all of us. It could take place sometime
in the the next Decade or so. which in fact means
there is not much time left for a world economy
to be driven largely by oil.

15
Plan for further change
  • even as the world looks for little solutions.
We must reinvent the answer itself. India and
China cannot first be water wasteful and then
    efficient

16
Plan for further change
  • Those with the power to promote change must do so
immediately, and must mot be frozen in fear of
the chaos that climate change threatens

17
Plan for further change
  • Oil can no longer continue to be the fuel source,
as it is now, for 99 per cent of the vehicles on
    the road.
  • Rick Wagoner CEO GM 2006

18
Plan for further change
  • If it took Britain the conquest of half the world
to provide her standard of living, how many
    worlds would India need?
  • Mahatma Ghandi

19
GREEN SCHOOLS AWARD, India
Government Senior Secondary School Boormajra,
Ropar district, Punjab,
  • Reduced stress on resources like energy and water
  • Although it does not have a rainwater harvesting
system, the school harvests water spilling from
    taps
  • In this way, it reuses around 60 per cent of the
    wastewater it generates
  • Data on the number of staff/students walking or
    bicycling to school is maintained
