2 Biology is the study of life...
3 all forms of life.
4It is comprised of all aspects of ecology,
evolution, behaviour, plant and animal form and
function within the realm of life.
5Biology includes the study of the petite
bacterial and viral microorganisms to the large
mammals such as humans.
6Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario offers
a 3-year general BSc in Biology, or a specialized
4-year BSc program in Biology within one of the
following options
- Biomedical
- Conservation and Restoration
- Terrestrial Aquatic Ecology
- Zoology
7Biomedical Studies
- An option to strengthen your knowledge in
biochemistry, cell biology, embryology, genetics,
histology, human anatomy, microbiology and
vertebrate physiology.
8Conservation Restoration Ecology
- An option to strengthen your knowledge
- Learn about protecting our environment before and
after industrial change - Wetland ecology
- Freshwater ecology
- Bioclimatology
9Aquatic Terrestrial EcologyAn option to learn
the dynamics of
- Plant animal systematics
- Environmental physiology

11Qualifying Year
- Biology offers a qualifying year after year three
to augment your education needs or to qualify for
a graduate program.
12Certificate in Environmental Biology
- By earning 30 credits in undergraduate courses
pertaining to the environment you can receive a
Certificate in Environmental Biology.
13Where is Laurentian University?
- Laurentian University is located in Sudbury,
Ontario. It has 550 hectares of natural
surroundings and is an ideal location for
environmental studies. There are many lakes in
the immediate area and four of the five lake
types border the campus. Biking, walking, skiing
and hiking trails inundate the area for your
pleasure.
14Classroom settings in Biology
- The first year is a common year to Biology
students who wish to pursue dynamic programs. - Upper year courses have smaller group
compositions ideal for interactive learning with
fascinating faculty, staff and graduate students.
15Laboratories
- There are specialized laboratories for specific
research needs. From cell line work and
bacteriology to invertebrate and vertebrate
research, laboratories are set up to meet the
needs of the projects.
- Course laboratories provide technical support,
new microscopes and equipped facilities for a
learning environment.
16Laboratories indoors and outdoors
- Biology includes field trips in the geographical
area as well as indoor laboratory sessions.
17The fourth year
- In their fourth year, students can choose a
course to research and write a thesis. One
component of this course is a fall camp often
carried out at Killarney or Grundy Provincial
Park.
18After the fourth year
- Biology offers a graduate program at the Masters
level (MSc). Undergraduates are encouraged to
apply.
- Biology also offers a graduate program at the PhD
level. Graduates are encouraged to apply.
19Graduate Programs Current projectsEcology and
evolution
- The role of forest regeneration on the recovery
of near-shore benthic invertebrate communities - Correlates of male reproductive success in
Eastern chipmunks - Population dynamics, sustainability and habitat
