Beginning Actions

• Jumonville Glen George Washington, Virginia
  volunteers, and Senecas ambush a small party of
  French.
• Fort Necessity French force from Fort Duquesne
  surround Washington and force his surrender.

Braddocks Defeat

• English force under Gen. Edward Braddock march
  on Fort Duquesne.
• Attacked by a much smaller force on French and
  Indians.
• Surrounded and confused, the English are caught
  in a viscious crossfire. They suffer severe
  losses and retreat
• Braddock dies 4 days later.

Battles of forts

• British attacks on several forts fail.
• French capture Fort Oswego on Lake Ontario and
  Fort William Henry on Lake George.

The Tide Turns

• William Pitt becomes Prime Minister
• Sends best British generals to America
• Gen. Amherst captures Louisbourg, most important
  fort in French Canada.
• Gen. John Forbes captures Fort Duquesne. Rename
  it Fort Pitt. Later becomes the city of
  Pittsburgh.
• Push French from Fort Niagara, Crown Point, and
  Fort Ticonderoga.

Battle for Quebec

• Quebec, under Gen. Montcalm, sits atop a bluff
  over the St. Lawrence River.
• Late at night British soldiers under Gen. Wolfe
  climb the cliffs and prepare to attack the fort.
• Armies meet on the Plains of Abraham.
• Both Generals are killed in the fierce fighting.
• French surrender on September 18, 1759.

Treaty of Paris

• After fall of Quebec, British capture Montreal
  and war in North America ends.
• Fighting continues in Europe for 3 more years.
• In 1763, England and France sign the Treaty of
  Paris.
• Britain gains all of Canada and all French lands
  east of the Mississippi.
• France keeps two islands in the Gulf of St.
  Lawrence and its islands in the west Indies.
• Spain gives up Florida to England.
