Resource Development

2
By Chief Dan George
  • Have I left the Eagle to Soar in Freedom?
  • The time will soon be here when my grandchild
will long for the cry of a loon the flash of a
salmon, the whisper of spruce needles, or the
screech of an eagle. But he will not make friends
with any of these creatures and when his heart
aches with longing he will curse me.
  • Have I done all to keep the air fresh? Have I
cared enough about the water? Have I left the
    eagle to soar in Freedom?
  • Have I done everything I could to earn my
    grandchilds fondness?

What are Resources?
  • A resource can be anything that is useful.
  • Resources have been categorized three ways.
  • Natural, Capital and human.

5
Natural Resources
  • Natural resources are materials that can be found
in nature and exploited to make a profit or for
    human need.
  • They are divided into non-renewable resources.
  • - (finite) are resources that cannot
be replaced once they are used up. Such materials
have been created by nature over millions of
years ago. Examples of these types of resources
are fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and
    metal ores.

  • Renewable resources replaces itself within 50
    years or so
  • - (infinite) are those which will
continue to supply materials indefinitely as long
as the system that produces them is not
disrupted. Examples of renewable resources are
    forests, fisheries, farming and freshwater.

Capital Resources
  • The way a society creates wealth. Any asset used
in the production of products and/or services.
  • Examples of capital would be money, machinery,
    factories, and education.
  • Russia in the late 1990s is an example of a
country rich in natural resources, but low on
capital resources needed to develop it.

Human Resources
  • The people within any society can help in
creating a strong nation or a poor nation.
  • The human resource, if health and educated, can
create a rich economy and be able to compete on a
    global market.
  • The same being said, however, a society where the
people are sick and uneducated will hinder the
    economic prosperity of a country.

12
Three population traits a prosperous country must
have
  1. There must be enough of a population to have a
productive work pool and a domestic market (small
    businesses and corporations)
  2. The people must be healthy so that they will be
able to work productively and raise a healthy
    family.
  3. There must be an opportunity for education and
career training, which will help them to become
    meaningful members of a society.
