Tropical Broadleaf Evergreen Forests

  • By Natalie Austin

2
Location and Precipitation
  • My biome is located in areas near the equator.
    These areas are tropical.
  • The average temperature is 64F year. In summer
it is hotter because the sun. Its precipitation
average is more then 400 inches a year.

3
Advanced Location
  • Central and South America
  • South Asia and some islands around there
  • West Africa
  • Northern Australia and more islands around there

4
Plants and Animals

  • Bromeliads
  • Venus Fly Trap
  • Lianas
  • Epiphytes
  • Toucan
  • Sloth
  • White-Faced Capuchin Monkey
  • Common Palm Civet
  • Bengal Tiger

5
Conditions
  • There are 3 layers in the Rainforest.
  • The canopy trees can grow to be more then 150
    feet tall.
  • The canopy holds all of the monkeys and birds.
  • The under story is very hot and very damp. It
also has some birds and a few monkeys living in
    it.
  • The rainforest floor contains bugs and snakes.
The snakes eat the bugs and small rodents. Two
mammals living on the rainforest floor are the
    agouti and coatis.

6
Endangered Species
  • Macaws
  • Spider Monkeys

7
Habitat Requirements for Endangered Species
  • The spider monkeys lives in the canopy. It favors
cooler areas. They eat the fruit at the top of
the trees that the other animals can not get to.
  • The Macaws stay near the canopy. They nest in
tree holes. They eat the seeds, nuts, and fruits
    that the trees supply.

8

  • Gold (Brazil)
  • Bauxite (used to make aluminum)
  • Jade

11
Medicinal aspects of the Rainforest
  • Tuba Root ( Used in flea dips)
  • Reserpine ( Used as a sedative and tranquilizer)
  • Curare ( Used as a muscle relaxant for surgery)

12
Rainforest Soil
  • The nutrient filled soil is only 4 inches deep.
  • It has red clay underneath it.
  • This causes the trees to have a shallow root
    system.
  • The nutrient base is very poor because of the
heavy rainfall which washes away the nutrients.
  • To compensate for this most rainforest plants
have developed a way to hold in the nutrients
    needed to live.
  • When these plants die there nutrients is quickly
    absorbed from the soil.

13
Major Pollution Source in the Rainforestis
  • Commercial Logging
  • This causes the soil in the rainforest to get
weaker then it already is. This also causes
pollution in nearby water supplies because the
logging machines can not be completely safe for
the environment. They could leak which could
cause oil or gas to get into the water supply
which would harm the animals and the rainforest
    ecosystem.

14
Destruction of the Rainforests
15
Those being harmed by the destruction of the
Rainforests
When they are gone? What next?
