Benefit Trust What Is It?
  • In July 2001 the Coalition implemented a retiree
    medical benefit plan, for retirees of the City of
    Santa Monica who are represented by bargaining
    units in the Coalition.
  • This benefit plan provides for partial health
    premium reimbursement after retirement.

Q. What Kind Of Benefits Are Covered?
  • A. Reimbursement towards the cost of health
    insurance premiums after retirement.

Q. How Do I Become Eligible? (current EEs)
  • A. Eligibility Requirements
  • Minimum of 5 years active service
  • Must be Age 58
  • Ceases Employment w/City on or after the date he
    or she becomes eligible to receive retirement
    benefits (currently age 50)
  • Contributions have been made to the Plan for All
    Years of Active Service

For Those Hired on or After January 1, 2009
  • A. Eligibility Requirements
  • Minimum of 10 years active service
  • Must be Age 58
  • Ceases Employment w/City on or after the date he
    or she becomes eligible to receive retirement
    benefits (currently age 50)
  • Contributions have been made to the Plan for All
    Years of Active Service

Q. When Will Benefits Begin?
  • A. Benefits commence after retirement, if you
    meet eligibility requirements. Benefit payments
    began July 1, 2006. 99 retirees are currently
    receiving benefits.

Q. What Is The Benefit Level?
  • A. The current benefit level is set at
    250.00/month. (This benefit level could be
    modified depending on investment return,
    participation levels, etc.)

Q. How Often Will I Get Paid?
  • A. Eligible participants are reimbursed
    monthly.

Q. Are These Benefits Taxable?
  • A. No. Reimbursement benefits received from the
    Trust are tax free to the retiree. The IRS has
    granted tax exempt status to these trusts.

Q. How Long Will Benefits Last?
  • A. Currently the Plan is designed so that
    benefits last until the death of the retiree
    and his or her spouse. However, the Trustees
    reserve the right to modify the benefit schedule
    in order to maintain the long term financial
    stability of the Trust.

  • It is your responsibility to provide
  • the Trust with updated address and dependent
    information. Failure to do so could result in
    loss or delay of benefits.
