A man named Melvil Dewey was born in New York.

In those days there were not many public
libraries.

Melvil did not like this! He wanted libraries
for everyone to use.

During his long life, Melvil worked to open new
libraries for everyone.

Melvil also wanted to improve how books were
organized in libraries so that people could find
them easily.
