    agents.
  • 400,000 people die each year from smoke related
    illness.

What Is In Tobacco
  • Carbon monoxide-colorless, odorless, poisonous
    gas produced when tobacco burns.
  • Prevents the body from getting oxygen.
  • Methanol-a poisonous liquid known to cause
    blindness.
  • Cyanide-a deadly poison.
  • Formaldehyde-an acidic gas

5
Forms Of Tobacco
  • Cigarettes-made from shredded tobacco leaves.
  • Filters may reduce the amount of tar and nicotine
    but not the harmful chemicals.
  • Flavored cigarettes may taste and smell sweet,
but produce more nicotine, tar and carbon
    monoxide.

6
Forms Of Tobacco
  • Cigars and pipes
  • Cigars contain 25 times more carbon monoxide and
up to 400 times the nicotine than cigarette
    smoke.
  • Cigar and pipe smokers are more likely to develop
cancer of the lip, mouth and tongue than
    nonsmokers.

7
Forms Of Tobacco
  • Smokeless tobacco
  • Placed in mouth
  • Just as addictive as smoking.
  • Higher risk of cancer of the mouth, esophagus,
    larynx and pancreas.
  • Leads to development of gum disease and stomach
    ulcers.

8
Tobaccos Effect On The Body
  • Respiratory System
  • Damages the alveoli, fragile, elastic air sacs in
the lungs where CO2 and O2 is exchanged.
  • Emphysema-disease that destroys the alveoli.
  • Lung cancer-smokers are 12-22 times more likely
    to develop lung cancer.

9
Tobaccos Effect On The Body
  • Digestive System
  • Use of tobacco increases risk of cavities and gum
    disease.
  • Dulls the taste buds.
  • Causes stomach ulcers.
  • Linked to cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus,
    stomach and pancreas.

10
Tobaccos Effect On The Body
  • Nervous System
  • Reduces flow of oxygen to the brain leading to a
    stroke.
  • Excretory System
  • Smokers are twice as likely to develop bladder
    cancer.
  • Circulatory System
  • Linked to heart disease by causing arteries to
    narrow.
