Britain, Russia, and the US had influence in each
    region

18
Agenda
  • BR
  • Review
  • Wrap up
  • Challenge
  • Cold vs. Hot
  • Brainstorm
  • Containment

19
  • What problems did you face?
  • How did you get through them?
  • What did you do well?
  • How did you get ideas?
  • Did you interact with other groups? How/why?
  • How did you feel when other groups were further
    ahead? Behind?

20
Bellringer
  • What are the two sides of the Cold War? What did
they each represent? What did they both want?

21
Cold War in America
  • McCarthyism and Bert the Turtle

22
Brrrrr
  • US and USSR are allies during WWII- however, we
    dont really trust each other
  • Remember theyre communists and we had that fear
    of them
  • We defeated Nazi Germany- so our alliance is
    technically over

23
In this Corner
  • The world after WWII was basically split between
two belief systems communism vs. democracy (USSR
    vs. US)
  • USSR wanted to spread communism throughout the
world- the US wanted to stop the spread

24
Hot vs. Cold
  • Ideas?

25
Choose Teams
  • The world divides between NATO and the Warsaw
    Pact

26
NATO
  • Keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the
    Germans down.

27
A New Foreign Policy
  • US adopts a policy of CONTAINMENT to keep
communism from spreading (keep it where it is)
  • We created the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall
Plan to help out nations trying to resist
communism by giving them financial aid

28
Domino Theory
  • The domino theory relates to communism.
  • If one nation becomes communist, then other
nations surrounding that nation will become
    communist as well
  • If one falls, they all fall
  • Thats why its so important to try to contain
communism- we dont want communism to take
    control

29
Revolution in China
  • We were trying to CONTAIN communism
  • However, it spread and Mao Zedong became the
    communist leader of China
  • Now two of the nations largest countries are
    dominated by communist governments
  • The threat of communism taking over is real

30
Domino Theory contd
  • Ugh! China fell to communism
  • In the following years, the US will try to stop
communism from spreading in Korea and Vietnam
  • It became a real fear that if communism spread
throughout the world, the cold war would turn HOT
    with atomic bombs

31
Soviets for World Domination
  • 1949 Soviets develop the atomic bomb because of
American spies who worked on the Manhattan
    Project
  • This starts the arms race with each side trying
    to one up the other
  • Soviets vs. US (Communist vs. Non-Communist)

32
Ready, Set, Arm Wrestle
  • In an ARMS RACE, the more nuclear weapons you
have, the more powerful the nation
  • US develops the H (hydrogen) bomb in 1952
  • USSR develops the H bomb in 1953
  • 2500 times MORE powerful than the atomic bomb
  • Estimated that 20 million Americans would die if
    Russians launched an attack

33
Space Race 1957-1975
  • Sputnik satellite launched by USSR 10/1957- First
    to orbit the Earth
  • Shocked America because we thought we were
leading the way in space technology- led to a
wave of fear and a decrease in morale
  • Who really knew what the satellite was? (Were
they spying on us?) How far could it go and what
    else it meant?
  • Led to the creation of NASA in 1958

34
Panic at Home
  • With atomic war always a threat, Americans at
home needed to prepare for an attack
  • The government told the people that they could
survive an atomic attack if they were prepared.
    Seriously.
  • The Federal Civil Defense Administration (kind of
like Homeland Security in the 50s) told the
public how they could be safe

35
Bomb Shelters
  • The government encouraged families to build fall
out shelters under their houses in case of an
    atomic attack
  • Ever seen the movie Blast from the Past?
  • If a bomb was dropped, you would be safe from the
fall out of the bomb and the radiation
  • It was recommended that people stay in the
shelter full time for at least 14 days after a
nuclear blast. Families with children were
advised to stock their shelter with recreational
materials to break the monotony. Monopoly games
were popular. Other suggested items included
playing cards and diaries to keep a record of
    one's stay.

36
Shelter in the 1950s
37
Duck and Cover
  • Children did duck and cover drills in school
  • Lessons were given on safety and how to survive
if the Soviets dropped a bomb on us

38
Bert the Turtle!
  • The government came out with this infomercial
about what people should do if they hear the air
    raid siren
  • Bert the Turtle became the icon of duck and
cover drills done throughout the 1950s and 1960s

39
Crazy Commies
  • After the Berlin Blockade, Germany is divided
    between free and communist.
  • Soviets BUILD A WALL to keep East Berliners from
    fleeing to the West
  • Think about why we want to build a wall between
the US and Mexico to keep people OUT, USSR built
    one to keep people IN
  • What does that say about communism and the USSR?
  • Would you want to stay there after they blockaded
    you for a year?

42
Sock Hops and Baby Boomers
  • As soldiers are coming back from WWII, they
reunite with their families and the 1950s will
have a HUGE increase in the number of babies
born- they are known as the baby boomer
    generation
  • The 1950s also saw the growth of Disneyland,
ELVIS mania, the Hula-Hoop, Sock-hops and
    drive-in movies

43
The Fearful 50sand 60sand 70s
  • While all this frivolity was going on, McCarthy
was picking out communists in the government
  • There were traitors in the government Alger
    Hiss
  • McCarthy accused 200 other govt officials and
    even the President!
  • People didnt trust each other- always living in
fear of each other and of an attack.

44
Red Scare Part II
  • With McCarthy accusing everyone of being a
communist, Americans were afraid of the
    government being overthrown
  • People didnt trust others, especially Russians
