Origins of NODA

  • Formal program started in 2001

Why start a NODA program?
  • Because no one should die alone!
  • We have a large population with little support or
    family in our area.

Who do we need involved?
  • Hospital(s)
  • Nursing staff
  • Committee
  • Volunteers

NODA Volunteers Compassionate Companions
  • Committed to the program
  • At least 18 years old
  • Must attend orientation session
  • Must sign volunteer agreement

NODA Patients
  • No friends/family
  • Less than 72 hours to live
  • DNR
  • Comfort care
  • Varying states of awareness
  • Variety of diagnoses
  • Consent

Initiating a NODA referral
  • Nurse calls Point of Contact (POC)
  • POC calls Phone Coordinator
  • Phone Coordinator
  • - Calls nurse for additional info
  • - Schedules Compassionate
  • Companions (CCs)
  • - Checks for status and updates everyone

What happens next?
  • Phone coordinator briefs the CC
  • Get bag to patients room
  • First Companion
  • - Arrives at hospital ASAP
  • - Goes to nursing unit speaks to patients
    nurse
  • - Accompanies nurse to patients room

Being with the patient
  • Hold their hand, talk, listen, read
  • Spiritual support
  • Comfort measures
  • Give permission to die
  • It is ok to do NOTHING for the patient other than
    being present sometimes this is the BEST
    option.
