INTRODUCTION
Prevalence After the modernization of a nation
the instance of obesity within that population
becomes much higher. Obesity and its related
health disorders hypertension dyslipidemia, type
II diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke,
gallbladder disease, osteoartheritis, sleep
apnea, respiratory problems, and certain cancers
(endometrial, breast, and colon) are reaching
epidemic proportions. The prevalance of obesity
has increased from 15 of the adult population in
1980 to 33 in 2004. This has brought obesity to
the forefront of the medical and research
communitys attention. (National Center for
Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion,
2007) Fat Sensing The bodys ability to sense
and and regulate caloric intake is incredibly
accurate, despite the recent rise in obesity.
(Bray, 1976) The hormone leptin was cloned by
Jeffery Friedman at The Rockefeller University in
1994 after it was known to play a signifigant
role in fat sensing. Leptin is produced by
adipose tissue, mainly white adipose tissue (WAT)
from where it travels to the brain through the
blood system. In the brain leptin acts mainly in
the hypothalamus, but affects many areas of this
gland which affects body temperature, hunger, and
thirst. It is known that leptin has an
anoerectic affect when injected directly into the
arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus, setting up a
negative feedback loop. Simply, as one
increases caloric intake, adipose tissue is
generated, WAT secretes leptin which reduces
caloric intake. Obesity
