Grammar Review
  • You are a sentence doctor.
  • You will examine 16 sentences afflicted with
    various grammar and usage ailments.
  • You will offer a diagnosis (explain what is
    wrong with the sentence) and then a prescription
    (fix it).
  • Every sentence has at least one ailment a clue
    as to how many is indicated by how many points
    each sentence is worth.
  • The exercise point total 45.

Grammar Review
  • For example, a sentence worth two points only has
    one problem You get one point for the correct
    diagnosis, and one point for the proper
    prescription.
  • If a sentence is worth three points, that means
    there is one diagnosis, but the problem appears
    twice in the sentence. For example, a diagnosis
    might be improper punctuation, and the sentence
    needs two punctuation fixes.
  • If a sentence is worth four points, that means
    there are two problems (diagnoses) and one
    instance of each problem in the sentence (two
    fixes).

    we studied all semester, including
  • Unclear antecedent reference or agreement
  • Parallel structure
  • Incorrect voice or tense for literary analysis
  • Incomplete sentences sentence fragments
  • Comma splices
  • Incorrect punctuation
  • Clutter
  • Spelling
  • Accuracy (as to the facts of the story or
    character)
  • Improper style (formatting of quotes, book
    titles, etc.)
