1) The Affect of Latitude

• Latitude affects the angles at which the suns
  rays hit Earths surface.
• The more vertical the rays, (near the equator)
  the hotter the climate.

2) The Affect of Land and Water

• Land heats more quickly than water, but it also
  cools more quickly.
• Water takes longer to warm, but it stays warmer
  longer.
• Places near water are likely to be warmer while
  places inland are cooler.

3) The Affect of Altitude

• The higher the altitude, the cooler the
  temperature.
• Altitude affects precipitation on a mountain
  side. (Rain Shadow)
• For every 1,000 feet you go up, the
  temperature drops 3 degrees.

• tropical
• desert

Desert

• Areas that receive 10 or less inches of
  precipitation a year are considered arid.
• Deserts can be hot or cold BUT they are all dry.
• Vegetation has adapted. Some have leaves and
  stems to store water. Others have long root
  systems to reach more water. They grow far apart
  so they do not compete for water.

Tropical

• Near the Equator- between the Tropic of Cancer
  and the Tropic of Capricorn.
• Warm all year long with a lot of rain. Sometimes
  as much as 100 inches per year.
• There is no Winter Season in the Tropics
• Many rainforest
• Average Temperature is 80 Degrees.

Temperate Cold

• Found in the Temperate Region (Middle Latitudes)
• Affected by the land
• Temperate Cold climates are mostly inland or in
  the center of a continent.
• Big changes in temperature from summer to winter.
• Same amounts of precipitation all year

Temperate Warm

• Affected by bodies of water
• Found along coastal areas near oceans and seas.
• Marine climate- warm and damp or wet
• Mediterranean- warm and mostly dry

Highlands

• Found in Hilly and Mountainous Regions
• Temperature, precipitation, and vegetation
  depends on altitude, wind, and the rain shadow.

Polar

• Name comes from their location near the North and
  South Pole.
• Polar Climate does not have a summer
• Some mosses an grass grow in some regions.
• In other regions, no vegetation grows at all.
