2Rhetoric
3 Rhetoric (the art of persuasion) requires
understanding a fundamental division between
what is communicated through language and how
this is communicated.
In other words its not WHAT you say, but
HOW you say it.
4There are three key aspects that make up the
Rhetorical Speech.
- kairos (the opportune moment)
- audience (the person to whom one is speaking)
- decorum (fitting one's speech to the context and
audience) - In sum at the appropriate moment, a writer or
speaker manipulates his/her words to the context
and audience in order to come to a desired result
or effect.
5Persuasion, according to Aristotle is brought
about through three kinds of persuasive appeals
which work together in combination
- Logos (logic) The appeal to reason.
- Pathos (emotions) The appeal to emotions of the
audience. - Ethos (ethics) The persuasive appeal of one's
character. One needs to appear both knowledgeable
about one's subject and benevolent the character
must establish credibility with the audience. - (Because we care)
