Art Curriculum and the Curriculum Cycle

• Year 4 Teaching for Understanding
• Implement new resources
• Tweak scope and sequence, essential questions,
  and assessments

Art Curriculum Revision

• K-12 Teachers met to align scope and sequence and
  create common academic vocabulary.
• Elementary Art Curriculum revision process
  completed 2013-14.
• Middle School Art Curriculum revision is nearly
  complete.
• HS Art Curriculum will be revised 2014-15.

• The Art Curriculum is aligned to the PA Academic
  Standards for the Arts and Humanities.
• PA Academic Standards for the Arts and Humanities

Art Curriculum and the PA Core Standards

• There are no PA Core Standards for Art.
• Art teachers use the processes of Art to teach
  the processes of the PA Core Standards
• For Example Art teachers teach student to do a
  Close Reading of a work of art, using the
  concepts and terminology of the PA Core Standards
  in Language Arts.

• Compare and Contrast
• A comparison of different Artists Paintings
• This isnt English classwhy do we have to write?
• RESEARCH SHOWS that when students take ownership
  for their learning by educating themselves
  through a buildup of basic knowledge of the
  visual arts and application of art
  critique/analyzing methods for the visual arts,
  their studio products improve greatly. In other
  words, the more you put your thoughts about art
  into words, the better your own art will become!

Art Curriculum and the PA Core Standards

• Elementary Art teachers will be reviewing PSSA
  exam questions to identify content and concepts,
  especially math and spatial concepts, that can be
  taught and reinforced in Art classes.

Coming Attractions in Art

• Were expanding vision of the Gala Evening of the
  ArtsArt Teachers are leading the way.
• --to include Robotics, National History Day,
• Poetry, Drama and more
• --to move the High School Art Show opening to
  the Gala Evening of the Arts, and
• --to add a Teacher Art show.
