Story Elements Pt 1(Setting/Character)
  • Created by Mrs. L. Younger
  • English 7

2
Setting
  • Setting is the time and place in which a story
    happens.
  • Setting can also be used to describe the time
period when the story is actually taking place.

Example of a Setting An abandoned old house on
Halloween.
3
Setting Characteristics
  • Setting can be realistic (like May 13, 2008 or
Dinwiddie, VA) or imaginary (like Shangri-La or
    the year 3015.
  • Setting usually describes the amount of time that
a story or event takes place.
  • Most short stories only have one or two settings
within a day or a weeks span.
  • Novels may have many different settings occurring
within days, weeks, months, years, or decades.

4
Setting Cont.
  • Setting is one of the easiest ways for a writer
    to establish mood.
  • Mood is the atmosphere or feeling created by the
    author for the story.
  • Mood can be mysterious, wacky, scary, or joyful.
  • Short stories or poems will evoke (make you feel)
    one particular mood.
  • Novels can take you through a series of moods.

5
Character
  • A character is any person (or person-like thing)
represented in a piece of literature.
  • Every story features at least one character.
  • Characters are usually people, but can be
animals or things, like gods and goddesses in
myths or pigs the fairy-tale, The Three Little
    Pigs.

6
What is Characterization?
  • Characterization is the way an author/writer
chooses to reveal the personality of a character
  • This can be done using two main methods
  • Indirect characterization
  • Direct characterization
