• King James II (1685)
• Wanted more control of England
• Thought colonies were too independent
• English Bill of Rights (1689)
• Parliament replaced the king
• Reduced power of the monarchy
• Colonists wanted rights to elect representatives

• Navigation Acts
• England controlled colony trade
• Limited who colonies could trade with
• Most had to trade only with England
• Resulted in smuggling of goods (sugar, rum,
  molasses)
• Triangle Trade Route
• Trade between Americas, Britain, Africa
• Exchange of goods and people

• Great Awakening (1730s-1740s)
• Religious movement
• People had to seek forgiveness for their sins
• People in different colonies started sharing
  ideas - uncommon at the time
• Enlightenment
• Scientific movement
• Reason and logic could improve society
• John Locke - people had natural rights (equality
  and liberty)
