  • Students will examine themes of alienation,
    phoniness , and maturity in the novel, The
    Catcher in the Rye .
  • Students will preview the novels essential
    questions to assist in activating prior
    knowledge.
  • Students will analyze the books title The
    Catcher in the Rye by understanding its role in
    symbolism.
  • Students will utilize reading strategies to help
    them monitor their comprehension.
  • Students will understand and apply literary
    elements of the novel such as characterization,
    conflict, and symbolism.
  • Students will determine the meanings of unknown
    words by using context clues and the words
    structure.
  • Students will utilize three components or reading
    fluency-speed, accuracy, and prosody.
  • Students will learn and utilize literature
    circles as a process for reading and
    comprehending the text.
  • Students will write for a variety of purposes and
    audiences using the standard English conventions
    of grammar, spelling, capitalization, and
    punctuation.

Class Assignment
  • Finish reading chapters 3 4. Make sure before
    you proceed to read a new chapter that you have
    at least two discussion questions per chapter.

    Holdens progress in school. Do you feel most
    teachers show a genuine concern about their
    students academic progress or do you think most
    teachers dont care as Holden suggests?

Class Assignment
  • Begin reading chapter two. If you have been
    absent since Monday, you will have to read
    chapter one, before reading chapter two.
  • Remember your purpose for reading is to fulfill
    your literature circle role. You should take
    notes and write questions during reading.
  • Dont forget to pay attention to your fluency.
    Take on a voice and try to vicariously experience
    the characters experience.

Essential Questions
  • Think about Holdens vision of the nature of
    childhood and adulthood. Are the two realms as
    separate as Holden believes them to be? Where
    does he fit in?
  • How do Holdens encounters and interactions with
    adults, children, women, and his peers evolve as
    the novel progresses?
  • Holden often behaves like a prophet or a saint,
    pointing out the phoniness and wickedness in the
    world around him. Is Holden as perfect as he
    wants to be? Are there instances where he is
    phony and full of hypocrisy?
  • Discuss the different types of relationships
    Holden attempts and the different types of
    intimacy in the book.
