Rotary is an International Organization

• There are 530 districts in over 160 countries
  throughout the world.
• Our club, Suffern Rotary Club is in District 7210
  which is comprised of 66 clubs with 2005 members.
• The district covers eight counties Rockland,
  Columbia, Dutchess, Green, Orange, Putnam,
  Sullivan, and Ulster

• Rotary International is governed by a president
  and a board of directors elected from all over
  the world.

• Annually each district elects a district governor

- but each club is autonomous.

In the beginning

• The first Rotary club was organized in Chicago in
  1905, by Paul P. Harris.

• The club, with four members, met in rotation at
  the offices of the members - thus the name
  Rotary.
• There are approximately 1.2 million members in
  over 30,000 clubs worldwide.

Women in Rotary

• About one third of our district members are
  women. This year about 38 of the District 7210
  club presidents are women.
• Our club presently has about 10 women as
  members.
• Women, initially, werent admitted to Rotary
  until 1986.

Service Above Self

• Rotary was not long to recognize that fellowship
  alone would not keep a group together there
  needed to be a purpose.
• The first service project was public restrooms in
  downtown Chicago, IL, USA.
• Rotary became the worlds first service club.

Object of Rotary

• The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster
  the ideal of service as a basis of worthy
  enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and
  foster

Paul Harris Fellows and Benefactors

• Many Suffern Rotarians and spouses are
  benefactors of the Permanent Fund.
• Over 20 members and partners are Paul Harris
  Fellows.
• Many now donate each week when paying for their
  meals.
• Some members are multiple PHF

• The Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of

Syrek A new board is elected to take office on 1
July of each year. All positions in Rotary are
one year terms that change on 1 July.

The Rotary Club of Suffern Projects

• Once a year, we identify possible projects.
• Committee prioritizes list to match club goals
  in conjunction with financial constraints and
  club giving guidelines.
• Board of Directors decides on cut-off point.
• Suffern Rotary sponsors as many of these projects
  as possible.

The Rotary Club of Suffern Recent Projects

• Donated the Community Bulletin Board in the
  center of Suffern in Avon Park.
• Constructed a bus shelter at the corner of
  Airmont Road and Route 59.
• Distributed in excess of 150,000 in scholarships
  to Suffern High School seniors over 250 since
  scholarship fund (Suffern Rotary Foundation,
  Inc.) inception.

The Rotary Club of Suffern Ongoing Projects

• Supply dictionaries to all third-graders in two
  Ramapo Central elementary schools.
• Support a girls school in Haiti.
• Support water projects in India.
• Arbor Day Supply every elementary school child
  in the Ramapo Central School District with an
  evergreen sapling, bookmark, Arbor Day poster for
  each classroom, and plant trees in each
  elementary school.

• Tom France Memorial Night at Antrim Playhouse
• Fall football pool
• Spring March-Madness pool
• Fall garage sale

• Club members, along with Suffern High School
  Interact members packaging seedlings for Arbor
  Day.

• Club member John Wickes, speaks with students
  about Arbor Day.

The Rotary Club of Suffern Exchanges

• Group Study Exchanges
• Teams of one Rotarian leader and four
  non-Rotarian business or professional young
  people visit the district for four to six weeks.

• Rotary Youth Exchange Program
• 16-18 year olds are exchanged world-wide.
• Part of a 7,000 students/year program.
• Rotarians host these young people in their homes
  for three to five months.
• Students become part of the family.
• Suffern has hosted students from France, Italy

• High School age students of good moral character.

Your Obligations in Rotary

• Participation
• To be a Rotarian you must give of your time and
  talents
• in community work
• in fellowship and social functions
• in club and district activities.

Your Obligations as a New Suffern Rotarian

• Attend at least one Board meeting.
• Make up at two different Rotary Clubs.
• Assist at Club sign-in table.
• Join a Committee.
• Once these have been completed, your NEW
  MEMBER ribbon is removed.

• Attendance
• Attendance at the weekly meetings is a benefit of
  Rotary. A minimum of 50 is expected.
• You can easily maintain your attendance levels by
  making up at another Rotary club meeting,
  participating in club service projects, and
  activities.
