Title: Writer

1
Writers Workshop
  • A 9 Week Course
  • Mrs. Schofer

2
What will we do in our Writers Workshop?
  • Work on improving writing overall
  • Work on improving sentences
  • Work on improving grammar, spelling and
    punctuation
  • Work on being more creative with writing

3
What kinds of activities will be doing?
  • You are going to put together a magazine which
    reflects your personality!
  • Youll write different articles, decorate and
even create advertisements for your magazine.
  • Youll work on exercises to help improve your
skill at writing so you can create the best
    magazine possible.
  • Youll decide the theme for your magazine and
decide what type of articles and art should go
    into it.
  • Your magazine will go on display, and you will
also show it to our class.

4
What type of magazines are there?
  • Some magazines focus on mainly one topic.
  • The articles, interviews, and essays are mainly
    about that subject.
  • The advertisements and artwork are about that
    subject.
  • There may be slight variation. For example this
magazine may have an interview with a chef.

5
Some Magazines about One Topic
6
Other Magazines
  • Some magazines are about a variety of topics, but
the topics relate to each other somehow.
  • These magazines are usually meant for a certain
audience, for example, teens, housewives, older
    men or entertainment fans.

Six Class Rules
  1. Be on time.
  2. Be prepared with class materials and assignments.
  3. Be respectful and non-disruptive.
  4. Bring only water out in class, not gum, candy or
    any other snacks.
  5. Keep all personal items put away.
  6. Remain in your seat except to put away or collect
materials, and expect to stay in class the full
period. Limit any need to leave class.

9
Other Tips for Success
  • Bring your magazine materials every day, or you
may leave some of them in the writers workshop
    container.
  • If you leave materials behind, you are taking a
chance that something may happen to them!
  • It is always your responsibility to see that your
work gets turned in on time.

10
Materials Recommended
  • One plain white binder with clear outside
pockets. This will be your final container for
your magazine. All writing and art should go into
    the binder.
  • Loose-leaf paper and plain white printer paper
  • Construction paper
  • Markers or color pencils
  • Glue sticks and small scissors

11
Your Assignment
  • Bring in at least one magazine. It could be an
    old one.
  • Consider what type of magazine you are interested
in creating. The title, with an explanation of
who your audience is, will be due by the end of
    the week.

12
Analyze 3 different magazines
  • For each one, answer the following questions
  • What type(s) of topics are covered in the
    magazine? Is the title relevant?
  • Name 3 products advertised. Why do you suppose
these products buy space in this magazine?
  • Who is the audience for this magazine?
  • Name 3 titles of articles or written pieces in
    the magazine.
  • Read at least one article in the magazine. What
is the language like? Is it formal or informal?
Is there a lot of difficult vocabulary? Are the
sentences long or short or a combination?
