What is the Global Ocean ?

• The five main oceans are Atlantic Ocean,
  Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean,
  Arctic Ocean
• The oceans are all connected to each other
• 71 of earths surface is covered by liquid water

What is Salinity ?

• A measure of the amount of solid material that is
  dissolved in a certain amount of liquid
• Ocean water has 35g/kg of dissolved solid in it
  so this means that 1 kg of ocean water has about
  35 g of solids dissolved in it

Why is Ocean Water Salty ?

• Ocean water is different from what we drink.
• Most of the salt in the ocean is the same kind of
  salt we use in our food.
• This type of salt is called sodium chloride.
• As rivers and streams flow toward the ocean, they
  dissolve minerals from rocks and soil.

Why Does Ocean Water Move ?

• Salinity and temperature both affect the density
  of ocean water.
• In fact , water temperature has a larger effect
  on the density of ocean water than salinity does.

What Affects Ocean Temperature ?

• The temperature of ocean water decreases as depth
  increases.
• Scientists can divide the water in the ocean into
  three layers.
• These three layers are the surface zone, the
  thermocline , and the deep zone.
