Title: Bell Work:

1
Bell Work
  • What is the name of the man who first invented
    the rocket?
  • What are the names of the first four planets?
What is the special name given to these four
    planets?

2
Mars
  • Mars is called the red planet.
  • The reddish color is caused by rust (iron oxide)
    in the soil.
  • Most studied planet other than earth.
  • Viking 1 and 2 spacecrafts landed on mars in
    1976.
  • Pathfinder spacecraft landed on Mars in 1997.
  • These three space crafts give us most of the
    information we know about Mars.

3
Mars
  • Mars is a cold planet because of its thin
atmosphere and distance from the sun.
  • The pressure is so low in the atmosphere that any
liquid water would quickly boil away.
  • The only water found on Mars is in the form of
    ice.

4
Martian Terrain
  • Dry river beds on Mars indicates that there
possibly was water in the past.
  • Mars now has two polar icecaps that contain
    frozen water and carbon dioxide.

5
Martian Volcanoes
  • Mars has two volcanic regions.
  • Olymups Mons is the largest mountain in the solar
system is a extinct shield volcano.
  • Mars has a gigantic equatorial rift valley, the
Valles Marineris. This canyon system stretches a
distance equivalent to the distance from New York
    to Los Angeles Arizona's
  • Grand Canyon could easily
  • fit into one of its side canyons.

6
Moons of Mars
  • Phobos and Deimos
  • Irregular shapes
  • Very dark surfaces
  • Could be captured asteroids

Bell Work
  • Good afternoon! Make today a great day!
  • Have agenda out on your desk open to todays
    date.
  • 1. What are the terrestrial planets?
  • 2. Explain what happens in a solar eclipse.
  • 3. Compare and contrast comets, asteroids, and
    meteoroids.

10
Jupiter
  • The first of the outer planets.
  • Is the largest planet!
  • Considered to be a gas giant made mostly of
    hydrogen and helium.
  • Known for its giant red spot.
  • This spot has a diameter three
  • times that of earth it was
  • thought to be 1.5 times
  • but is larger!

11
Jupiter
  • The giant red spot is a long lasting storm
    system.
  • Jupiter radiates, or gives, much more energy into
space than it receives from the sun.
  • Two Pioneer missions, 2 Voyager missions and 1
Galileo mission have all studied Jupiter.
  • Galileo sent a probe to the Jupiters atmosphere
in 1995 that sent back data on the atmosphere
    composition, temperature and pressure.

12
Jupiters moons and rings
  • Jupiter has 63 moons and a ring system. The four
of Jupiters natural satellites are Io, Europa,
    Ganymede, and Callisto.
  • Io has active volcanoes, and Europa has the
possibility of a water environment friendly to
    life.
