Program Description
  • GATES
  • Grades K-12
  • The GATES program provides curriculum
    differentiation for students who perform at
    remarkably high levels of accomplishment when
    compared to others of the same age.

  • Identification Process
  • Student Referral - teacher, parent, counselor, or
    the student himself may refer a student
  • Student is assessed in the areas of intellectual
    and specific academic abilities using both test
    scores and checklists.
  • A committee of 3 people review the data and make
    academic recommendations
  • (All kindergarteners and 2nd graders are
    automatically screened.)

Advanced Placement (AP)
  • High School
  • AP courses are open for any student wishing to
    enroll. The AP program was created by College
    Board in 1955 to provide students with
    college-level work in high school.
  • AP exams are offered during May of each year.
    Students may earn college credit for their AP
    exam scores.

Pre Advanced Placement (Pre-AP)
  • Grades 6-11
  • Pre-AP courses are open for any student wishing
    to enroll.
  • Pre-AP courses are academically advanced classes
    designed to challenge motivated students to
    experience rigorous content.

Credit By Examination for Acceleration
  • Grades K-12
  • An exam to earn credit for an academic course for
    which the student has no prior instruction.
  • (See Student Handbook p. 31 for additional
    information.)

Duke University Talent Identification Program
(TIP)
  • Grades 4, 5, and 7
  • A program sponsored by Duke University that
    recognizes students who demonstrated high
    performance in TAKS.

Academic UIL
  • Grades 2-12
  • Academic UIL - Extra-curricular competitions that
    provide students an opportunity to excel in
    activities beyond the classroom.

Destination Imagination (DI)
  • Grades K-12
  • DI is a competitive program that helps young
    people develop skills in time management,
    teamwork, creative and critical thinking, as well
    as problem solving.

Academic Decathlon (Ac Dec)
  • High School
  • Academic Decathlon is a team competition where
    students compete against other schools in 10
    categories art, economics, essay, interview,
    language and literature, mathematics, music,
    science, social studies and speech.
