Policy Statement 105 THE CODE OF STUDENT
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

• DEFINITIONS OF VIOLATIONS
• A. CHEATING. Intentionally using or attempting to
  use unauthorized materials, information, notes,
  study aids or other devices in any academic
  exercise. This definition includes unauthorized
  communication of information during an academic
  exercise.
• B. FABRICATION AND FALSIFICATION. Intentional and
  unauthorized alteration or invention of any
  information or citation in an academic exercise.
  Falsification is a matter of altering
  information, while fabrication is a matter of
  inventing or counterfeiting information for use
  in any academic exercise.

• C. MULTIPLE SUBMISSION. The submission of
  substantial portions of the same academic work
  (including oral reports) for credit more than
  once without authorization.
• D. PLAGIARISM. Intentionally or knowingly
  presenting the work of another as one's own
  (i.e., without proper acknowledgement of the
  source). The sole exception to the requirement of
  acknowledging sources is when the ideas,
  information, etc., are common knowledge.
• E. ABUSE OF ACADEMIC MATERIALS. Intentionally or
  knowingly destroying, stealing, or making
  inaccessible library or other academic resource
  material.
• F. COMPLICITY IN ACADEMIC DISHONESTY.
  Intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting
  to help another to commit an act of academic
  dishonesty.

procedures for dealing with any integrity
violations.

HANDLING VIOLATIONS

• COLLECT THE EVIDENCE
• CONTACT THE DEAN OF STUDENTS
• Ask if student has previous offenses.
• Meet with student and present evidence.
• If action is warranted, follow settlement
  procedure.

FIRST OFFENCE

• SETTLEMENT PROCEDURE

• Fill out settlement form with penalty
• Student has 72 hours to consider whether to
  accept penalty

Either

• STUDENT ACCEPTS AND SIGNS FORM IN PRESENCE OF
  FACULTY
• Form goes to dean of students office.
• Kept on file for five years.
• Or
• STUDENT DECLINES PENALTY
• Academic Integrity Board (AIB) hearing is
  conducted.

• SECOND OFFENSE (or penalty greater than F in
  course)
• Academic Integrity Board hearing is ALWAYS
  conducted.

PENALTIES

• MOST FIRST OFFENSES
• a. formal warning,
• b. reduced grade (including "F") for the
  assignment,
• c. reduced grade (including "F") for the entire
  course.

PENALTIES (contd)

• MOST SECOND OFFENSES
• d. Disciplinary suspension from the University
  for a designated period of time.
• e. The grade of "FX" for the course on the
  academic transcript. This indicates that the
  student failed because of dishonesty.
• f. Expulsion from the University.
• g. Revocation of degree if an offense is
  discovered after graduation.
