• The process by which food molecules are broken
  down to release energy
• Occurs by aerobic and anaerobic processes

• Aerobic processes require oxygen
• Anaerobic processes do not require oxygen

• The first step in respiration is Glycolysis.
• It is the breakdown of glucose into 2 smaller
  molecules.
• Glycolysis does not require oxygen
• Occurs in the cytoplasm (outside mitochondria)

• The 2nd Step of aerobic respiration is the Krebs
  Cycle.
• Occurs in the mitochondria.
• High energy electrons are collected to be used at
  the next step.
• CO2 produced

• Electron transport chain
• energy from electrons collected in the Krebs
  Cycle is used to create ATP for the cell.

• If there is no oxygen some cells can use an
  anaerobic respiration process called
  fermentation.
• Fermentation in muscles produces lactic acid

• Many fungi and bacteria carry out alcoholic
  fermentation producing ethanol as a final
  product.
• ex. Yeast and beer
