Anaerobic metabolism
Obligate Anaerobes

• restricted to anaerobic environments

• do not utilize oxygen in metabolism

• actually poisoned by oxygen

• examples include many primitive bacteria

Facultative anaerobes

• can switch to aerobic metabolism if there is
  enough oxygen present.

• Why would they want to switch???

Because it's more efficient!!!
