What is good about salt?
  • Preserves the quality of food
  • Cheap
  • Improves taste of foods

What is bad about salt?
  • Contributes to high blood pressure
  • Causes water retention
  • Can contribute to heart disease
  • Deceiving very difficult to tell how much salt
    is in food because the taste can be masked by
    sugar and other additives

  • Minimum 200mg1/10 teaspoon (almost none)
  • Maximum 2400 mg 1 1/5 teaspoon
  • Average American consumes 5000 mg per day
  • Why so much?
  • We eat a lot of packaged foods and restaurant

  • Fructose- fruit
  • Dextrose- liquid, food additive form
  • Lactose- dairy contains calcium, vitamin A
  • Maltose- sugar in most grain
  • Sucrose- (empty calories)- processed table
    sugar
  • Glucose- type of sugar that most food molecules
    are converted into to circulate in the blood

  • Preserves quality
  • Helps keep food from drying out
  • Lowers the freezing point of foods
  • Enhances the appearance of food

  • Energy rush, but a quick drop from processed
    sugar
  • Tooth decay
  • Can lead to diabetes
  • Contributes to heart disease
  • Obesity
  • Lowers your immune systems ability to function

  • We are bombarded with sugar advertisements
