2About SEPHO
- One of nine regional Observatories launched in
2000 with the primary aim of improving health and
reducing inequalities in the South East Region
through provision of intelligence to improve
decision making - Lead Observatory for work related to physical
activity, obesity and transport (this is
delivered through the National Obesity
Observatory) and coronary heart disease and
stroke - A service within the health intelligence
capability in Solutions for Public Health (SPH),
the largest NHS public health consultancy. SPH is
hosted by NHS Milton Keynes and delivers highly
specialised public health services in health
intelligence, commissioning support, screening
and public health development
3SEPHO Governance
- SEPHOs core programme is commissioned by
the Department of Health South East through the
SEPHO commissioning group - The director is accountable to the two
regional directors of public health for the
delivery of the core programme - SEPHO commissioning group
- Is accountable to the Department of Health
and to the South Central and South East Coast
Strategic Health Authorities, through the
regional directors of public health, who also
represent the interests of primary care trusts in
the South East. - Its remit is
- to shape the strategic agenda for SEPHO and for
regional health intelligence - to understand the needs of stakeholders within
the region - to commission and authorise SEPHOs core regional
work programme, and agree changes/ amendments to
work programme. - to ensure performance management of SEPHO on the
delivery of its core programme.

Suggestions for new topics Description
Productivity metrics in prevention To be defined in discussion with Professor Brian Ferguson at Yorkshire and Humber PHO.
Staying healthy performance profiles An annual Staying Health Profiling tool, with a range of indicators that reflect the preventive activities within the NHS.

Priority topics Description
Clinical quality reports revising and updating An update of the indicators in the clinical quality reports. Further reports on new topics, or developing the existing topics.
Primary Care inequalities A set of indicators of inequalities in access and outcomes to services in primary care in the South East by primary care trust, using QOF data.
Health Profiles SEPHOs regional contribution to Health Profiles 2009.
Public health surveillance Guidance and resources to support PCTs utilise surveillance systems appropriately and effectively.
PH Intelligence Training Two public health intelligence courses targeted at analysts working in the South East, one in South East Coast and one in South Central. Contribution to funding being sought from both SHAs.
