Who is Responsible?
  • Any member of the sports medicine team that is
    trained to properly fit equipment.
  • Certified Athletic Trainer
  • Equipment Manager
  • Coach
  • Physician
  • Ensuring that each participant has the
    appropriate protective equipment and that it fits
    properly is a legal responsibility for the
    sponsoring organization.

The Football Helmet
  • Purpose
  • To decrease the linear forces that are
    transmitted during a hit.
  • To protect the face, scalp, and skull.
  • The Helmet Should Never Be Used As A Weapon

Fitting The Helmet
  1. Measure head circumference 1 inch above eyebrow.
  2. Place helmet on wet head.
  3. Check height of helmet.
  4. It should rest about 1 inch or 2 finger widths
    above the eyebrows
  5. Check the rear of the helmet.
  6. Does the back of the helmet cover the base of the
    skull?
  7. Check the inside of the helmet.
  8. Do the jaw pads touch the face?
  9. Test the helmet by pushing down on the top and
    trying to rotate the helmet form side to side.

The Mouthpiece
  • Two Types
  • Boil and Bite
  • Can be purchased at any sporting goods store.
  • Inexpensive
  • Provides sufficient protection if it used
    correctly.
  • Custom
  • Must be constructed by a dentists to fit the
    athletes teeth.
  • More expensive
  • Provides the best protection

Fitting Shoulder Pads
  1. Ask about previous injuries.
  2. Find out their position.
  3. Place shoulder pads on athlete.
  4. Ensure that they fit and protect what they
    should.
  5. Snug around the chest and through the axilla.
  6. There should be ½ to ¾ inch clearance from the
    neck to the pad.
  7. Pads should cover (Through the Full Range of
    Motion)
  8. The Sternoclavicular joint.
  9. The anterior, middle, and posterior deltoids.
  10. The Acromioclavicular joint
  11. The Scapula and Sternum
