The Reformation and Counter-Reformation
  • The entire 17th Century was a great big
publicity war put on between the Catholic and
protestant churches, each side vying to attract
more customers--sort of like Coke and Pepsi do
today--by spending tons of money on rock stars
and pop-concertsI mean on musicians and
    church-concerts.
  • Each side was trying to convince the consumers
that they were the best and only church from
    which to gain salvation.

7
Baroque Advertising Strategies
  • In addition, both churches needed to emotionally
    connect with the people.
  • Therefore, an appeal to emotions through ornate
magnificence seemed to be the best option.
  • They didnt want to warn customers, like the
medieval philosophy. They wanted to appeal to
    customers.
  • Hence, we come to the word Baroque.

Baroque Music
  • Like painters of Baroque, musicians of the
Baroque style welcomed the strange, luscious,
    ornate, and emotionally appealing.

10
How Music Was Changed
  • Before Baroque
  • Music was composed in a general sense, to be
played by any instrument, or sung by anyone.
  • Instruments were designed for only one key. They
had to be retuned for a musical piece in a
    different key.
  • During and After Baroque
  • Music was composed for specific instruments, and
for specific types of voices (alto vs. soprano).
  • Musical instruments were redesigned to play in
multiple keys, to accommodate the need for
    musical exploration.
