Mutations

• A change in a genetic trait due to a change in
  DNA
• Mutations can happen in sperm or eggs (gametes)
  or body cells (somatic)
• If a mutation occurs in gametes the change can be
  inherited in the next generations

Types of Gene Mutations

• Point mutation substitution, addition, or
  removal of a nucleotide

Frame shift mutation

• removal or addition of a nucleotide causes shift
  in entire sequence

Substitution

• results in new codon (could be different, same
  amino acid or stop)
• EX. Sickle cell anemia
