• Time Zones

Time Zones

• A time zone is a region of the Earth that has
  adopted the same standard time, usually referred
  to as the local time
• Most adjacent time zones are exactly one hour
  apart
• It is based on the earths rotation from west to
  east every 24h

• The earth passes through 360º 15º for each hour
  (360/2415)
• Sometimes we have irregularly-shaped zones that
  follow political boundaries (eg. NL time half
  hour difference) or that change their time
  seasonally (as with daylight saving time)

• The (1st)first Time zone starts at the Prime
  Meridian (0º longitude) and is called Greenwich
  Mean Time (GMT)
• Time zones west of 0º are 1 hour earlier
• Time zones east of 0º are 1 hour later
• The two sides meet at 180º, this forms the
  International Date Line at this point the date
  changes either one day ahead or one day back
