Translations in the Coordinate Plane
2
TranSLation of a geometric figure is a SLide of
the figure in which all points move the same
distance in the same direction.

Horizontal- left and right

Vertical- up and down

Jog your memory
  • In a coordinate plane, x comes first, then y. X
is the horizontal and y is the vertical. Written
together, they are coordinate pairs and are
    written as (x, y)

Writing rules
  • A rule is written to show what happens to both
the x coordinate and the y coordinate. If you
are to translate a figure 4 units horizontally
    the rule is (x,y) (x 4, y 0) because
horizontal motions use the X axis.
  • If you are to translate a figure -2 units
    horizontally, the rule is
  • (x,y) (x 4, y 0)

11
Another example
  • If you are to translate a figure 3 to the left
    and 2 up, the rule is (x,y) (x-3, y2)
  • Talk with your shoulder partners about why this
    works.
