• Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc was
• born on 8th February 1880 in
• Munich.
• His father was a professional
• landscape painter.
• In 1900, Marc began to study at the
• Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
• He was a painter and printmaker,
• one of the key figures of the
• German Expressionist movement.

• On 27th March 1907, he
• married Marie Schnür in
• Munich.
• In 1911 Franz married the
• painter Maria Franck in
• London.
• Marc had no children.

His work

• He worked together with Wassily
• Kandinsky on the Blauer Reiter
• (The Blue Rider).
• The most famous of his works is
• The Blue Horse.
• Other works are Fate of the
• Animals, Tiger, The yellow
• Cow and Fighting Forms.

His last years

• In 1914, when World War I
• had broken out, Franz sent a
• letter to Kandinsky.
• He wrote In these times, anyone, like it or
  not, belongs to his nation. I fight against this
  feeling very much my heart is closer to Europe
  than to Germany.

• In 1916 he took part in the
• First World War, where he
• died.

• Franz Marc died on 4th
• March 1916 in France.
• His grave is in the park of
• the castle at Gussainville
• Braquis and has a simple
• memorial stone.

In 1917 his body was transferred to Kochel am See
in Germany.
