  • Dont use ambiguous wording
  • Do not include irrelevant information
  • Emphasize qualifiers such as EXCEPT and BEST in
    the stem item.

  • What is the purpose of a distractor?
  • Distractors should appear to be plausible answers
    for students who have NOT met the objective.
  • Conversely, distracters will appear as
    implausible for those students who HAVE met the
    objective.

    distractors)?
  • Write the answer first, then create the
    distractors
  • Only provide plausible distractors.
  • Alternatives should be similar in length.
  • Provide alternatives in logical order
  • Ex Dates, events, steps in a process
  • Avoid using all of the above, none of the
    above, always, and never
  • Avoid textbook or verbatim phrasing
  • Avoid clues in the answer choices that give away
    the correct response.
  • Make sure that the correct response is the ONLY
    correct response.
