What Is Editing?

• Editing takes place when one is looking for
  errors in the mechanics of a piece of writing.
• Mechanics include such things as spelling,
  grammar, punctuation, capitalization, etc.
• You should also make sure you have complete
  sentences and not phrases or clauses.

Ways to Edit Better

• Getting someone else to check your work over can
  help you catch mistakes your brain will try to
  ignore your own mistakes.
• There is a way to throw off your brains
  smoothing function

Editing Trick!

• Edit sentence by sentence, but work BACKWARDS
  through your piece.
• This will help you notice mistakes your brain
  automatically fills in for you when you read
  forward.

Useful tools when editing

• Dictionary good for checking spelling and
  meaning
• Grammar book good for checking capitalization,
  punctuation, etc.
• Thesaurus if youve been repetitious, try using
  an alternate word, but BE CAREFUL! If you dont
  know the replacement word well, it might not mean
  what you think it means
