It is the contrast between black and white and
all the tones in between.

Contrast
  • contrast refers to the arrangement of opposite
    elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth
    textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a
    piece so as to create visual interest, excitement
    and drama.
  • Your artwork should have a high contrast using
    all values.

Value doesnt mean just black and white

Value Scale
  • Use the width of the ruler to create each of the
    three rectangles. Each value scale should be 6
    inches long resulting in 6,one inch boxes.

Sketchbook
  • In your sketchbook draw three value scales
    regular shading, cross hatching, and stippling.

Value Still Life
  • Choose one of the three still lives from around
    the room.
  • Pick your angle. Get comfortable because you will
    be here for three days.
  • Draw a contour line drawing (outline of the whole
    scene or a portion of the scene)
  • Shade your project using regular shading, cross
    hatching, and stippling.
