Title: What are the different biomes of the world?

1
What are the different biomes of the world?
2
What is a biome?
  • Biome - a large region characterized by a
specific type of climate and certain types of
    plant and animal communities
  • Give me some examples
  •

3
What cause Biomes to be different? Climate The
meteorological conditions, including temperature,
precipitation, and wind, that characteristically
prevail in a particular area Geographic factors
mountains, valley, river
4
The different Land Biomes of the World
  • Desert
  • Temperate Deciduous Forests
  • Coniferous Forests
  • Tropical Rain Forests
  • Savanna
  • Tundra

5
Biomes of the world
  • Desert
  • a hot, dry biome inhabited by organism adapter to
survive high daytime temperatures and long
    periods without rain
  •   Give me an example

6
Temperate Deciduous Forests The deciduous forest
has four distinct seasons, spring, summer,
autumn, and winter. In the autumn the leaves
change color. During the winter months the trees
lose their leaves. Give me an example
7
Coniferous Forests
  • Coniferous forests are made up mainly of
cone-bearing or coniferous trees, such as
spruces, hemlocks, pines and firs. The leaves of
these trees are either small and needle-like or
scale-like and most stay green all year around
(evergreen). All are softwoods able to survive
    cold temperatures and acidic soil.
  • Give me an example

8
Tropical Rain Forests
  • The tropical rainforest is earth's most complex
biome in terms of both structure and species
diversity. It occurs under optimal growing
conditions abundant precipitation and year round
warmth. There is no annual rhythm to the forest
rather each species has evolved its own flowering
and fruiting seasons. Sunlight is a major
    limiting factor.
  •  Give me an example

9
Temperate Grassland
  • Temperate grasslands are characterized as having
grasses as the dominant vegetation. Trees and
large shrubs are absent. Temperatures vary
more from summer to winter, and the amount of
rainfall is less in temperate grasslands than in
    savannas.
  •   Give me an example

10
Savanna
  • a tropical grassland biome with scattered clumps
    of trees
  •   Give me an example

11
Tundra a far-northern biome characterized by
long, cold winters, permafrost and few
trees Permafrost the permanently frozen ground
below the soil surface in the arctic tundra
Give me an example
12
The different Aquatic Biomes of the
World Marsh Swamp Estuary Littoral
zone Open-water zone Deep-water zone
13
Wetland an area of land where the water level is
near or above the surface of the ground for most
of the year.  Marsh a treeless wetland
ecosystem  Swamp a wetland ecosystem in which
trees and vines grow
14
Tributary a stream that flows to a larger stream
or other body of water  Estuary an area where
fresh water from streams and rivers spills into
the ocean.   Give me an example
15
Marine describes an ecosystem based on salty
water   Littoral zone the zone of water that is
closest to the edge of the land   Give me an
example
16
Open-water zone The zone of water that extends
from the littoral zone out and that is only as
deep as light can reach through the
water   Deep-water zone the zone of water that
is below the open-water zone where no light
reaches
