1
Notes 18.1
  • Classification

2
Why Classify?
  • To study the diversity (variety) of life,
biologists use a classification system to name
    group organisms.
  • Taxonomy Putting organisms into categories
  • Carl Linneaus --- Developed classification system
    Naming system
  • Grouped or ranked organisms from most general to
    most specific

3
Assigning Scientific Names
  • Needed an international naming system
  • There are often several words for the same object
  • Example --- Cool --- Temperature or excellent
  • Linnaeus decided to create a system for naming
  • Called this system Binomial Nomenclature or the
    2-name naming system

4
Naming Continues
  • An organisms scientific name consists of 2 parts
    --- the genus and species
  • The genus part is like your first name
  • The species part is like your last name
  • Example ---- Grizzly bear Common name
  • Ursus genus name is capitalized
  • arctos species name not capitalized
  • Both need to be underlined or written in italics

5
7 Levels to Linnaeus System
  • Kingdom --- Most general
  • Phylum --- Kingdoms divided
  • Classes
  • Orders
  • Family
  • Genus
  • Species --- Most specific
  • Each level is called a taxon

6
7 Levels for Grizzly Bear
  • Kingdom Animalia
  • Phylum Chordata
  • Class Mammalia
  • Order Carnivora
  • Family Ursidae
  • Genus Ursus
  • Species arctos
