History
  • China had typically been ruled by a series of
    dynasties
  • The last dynasty was the Qing
  • They had been in power since 1644
  • But in 1911, a revolution began in China to
    overthrow this system and move China more towards
    modernization and industrialization

Mao Zedong
  • In 1921, a group met in Shanghai to organize a
    Chinese Communist Party
  • Mao was their leader
  • He envisioned a different Communism than that of
    Russia
  • However, in the southern part of China, a
    different idea about government was forming

Chiang Kai-Shek orJiang Jieshi
  • Son of a middle class merchant
  • Many of his followers were bankers and business
    people
  • Feared communism
  • Promised democracy to his followers
  • Peasants didnt feel like he was doing enough to
    help him so they switched to the Communist Party
    Mao had won

The Showdown
  • By 1930, nationalists and communists were at war
    civil war
  • Mao recruited peasants to fight in his army
  • He trained them in guerrilla warfare
  • Jiang gathered an army of 700,000 and surrounded
    the communists
  • The communists fled in an event called The Long
    March
  • Finally, Mao and his followers settled in caves
    in northwestern China where he would regain his
    following
