Bell Work 10/21/14
  • Answer the following question on your bell work
    sheet
  • If you were a rock in the rock cycle, what are
some different events that may occur on your
    journey?

Agenda
  1. Bell Work
  2. Need to Know
  3. Rock Cycle Reassessment
  4. Word Wall
  5. Journey on the Rock Cycle
  6. Exit Ticket

Need to Know
  1. On a diagram of the Earth, you would label the
center of the planet as theA. inner coreB.
    outer coreC. mantleD. crust
  2. Read the section titled Going Deeper Below the
Mountain. Why do scientists believe this
research is important? Explain in at least 3
    complete sentences.

Real-Life Rocks
  • Can you melt a diamond?
  • Diamond isn't easy to melt, which is why the
    scientists used Sandia's Z machine, the world's
largest X-ray generator, to subject tiny squares
of diamond, only a few nanometers thick, to
pressures more than 10 million times the
    atmosphere's pressure at sea level.
  • Can humans make enough heat and pressure to make
    stones?
  • Diamond-making machines subject a graphite-carbon
core at a pressure of 850,000 PSI (pounds per
square inch) for four days, recreating conditions
similar to those 100 miles below the earth's
surface. The lab-grown diamonds that come out are
optically, chemically and physically identical to
    those that occur in nature.

Objectives
  • 24. Journey on the Rock Cycle
  • Identify the major processes that drive the rock
    cycle (SPI 0707.7.3).
  • Today we will take a journey on the rock cycle
create a comic strip about our journey.
  • Label a diagram that depicts the three different
    rock types (SPI 0707.7.2).
