Physical methods
Physical agents, e.g. heat, solar energy and
radiation, can be used only as pre-planting soil
treatment since they can be harmful to the actual
crop. They usually do not leave residues or
pollute the environment. Heating is still the
major physical tool for soil disinfestations of
bacteria. It is also used for treating
propagation material, and in recent years, for
treating agricultural products at the
post-harvest stage.

The most efficient way to kill insects is to
stomp on them, literally or figuratively! Physical
or mechanical control methods can be as simple
as hand-picking the bagworms from a juniper bush,
cutting tent caterpillars out of a shade tree, or
using a fly swatter and window screens to keep
your home free of flying insects. At the other
end of the technology spectrum are the electronic
bug killers. These high-tech fly swatters produce
an ultraviolet glow that attracts flying insects
to an untimely death on an electrified grid.

Banana weevils trap
For combating black weevil the technique most in
fashion is to use a synthetic pheromone which
attracts the insects, which are then captured in
a plastic trap. There is some education to do on
this technique for example, certain periods are
much more effective than others and mass trapping
can be conducted during these times.

There are other methods too, such as changing the
spatial organisation of the plot and using
companion plants to slow the distribution of
weevils.
The idea is to arrive at a cropping system which
is truly integrated.

Moth Catcher trap
  • The application rate is 1-2 traps / ha for
    monitoring.
  • Timing of Trap placement
  • Trap should be placed before the emergence of the
first generation of the target insect and should
continue until the end of the season.

Yellow sticky
Yellow sticky traps are designed to attract and
capture a variety of insects such as winged
aphids, fungus, gnats, whiteflies, olive fruit
flies and cucumber beetles.
They can also be used to detect for the presence
of the glassy winged sharpshooter along pierce's
disease risk habitat.
These traps are made of a durable cardboard
material, which is colored with the proven insect
attractant yellow and coated with an odor free
sticky surface.

Inter-row tillage
Tillage can reduce weed populations in row crops
such as potatoes and sugar beets.
The first tillage should be early and shallow.
Subsequent passes can be made if required.
Take care to avoid crop injury.

Fall tillage
Seedlings of winter annuals and some perennial
weeds can be controlled with early fall
tillage. Use a blade cultivator in the Brown soil
zones to maintain stubble. Field cultivators can
be used in the other soil zones. If stubble is
sparse, avoid fall tillage and till early in the
following spring. The time of fall tillage varies
with the weed species. In general, fall tillage
is done between crop harvest and soil freeze-up.
Both fall tillage and a fall application of
herbicide are very effective on winter annuals
and should be part of most weed control programs.

Destruction of infected plants
Forest services sometimes destroy all the trees
in an area where some are infected with insects,
if seen as necessary to prevent the insect
species from spreading.
Farms infested with certain insects, have been
burned entirely, to prevent the pest from
spreading elsewhere.

To sum up
  • Physical and mechanical practices are used to
control the pest and disease. Physical agents
like heat, solar energy, radiation mostly used
for pre planting treatments. UV bug zapper for
banana weevil, moth catcher traps, inter row
tillage, fall tillage and destruction of infected
plant to prevent the spreading of pest and
    disease
