The CISM Education Mission To recruit and train
the next generation of space physicists and imbue
them with an understanding of the Sun Earth as
a system. Legacy A young community of diverse
well-trained space physicists that are capable of
using computational tools to study the space
environment and who approach problems from an
interdisciplinary viewpoint.
CISM Education Program Elements The CISM
Education Program consists of four major
elements.
1. Building a Graduate Student Community
There are currently 27 graduate students from 8
institutions work on CISM related projects. At
their nucleus is an expanding group of students
who are building strong links with one another
that they will carry into their early careers.
Activities such as the CISM graduate student
retreat, newsletter, webpage, and AG meetings are
aimed at strengthening this community. The
activities are described more extensively in
another poster.
CISM Education Objectives 1. Provide graduate
students with opportunities for broad-based
research in CISM related fields and with
professional mentoring and role models. 2.
Provide undergraduates (2 and 4 year) with
research opportunities (academic year and summer)
as well as mentoring and role models. 3. Provide
graduate and undergraduate students with
opportunities to develop professional
relationships with peers and scientists in CISM
related fields. 4.Provide space weather resources
and professional development for 6-14 teachers
and provide information about space weather to
the general public.

2. The CISM Summer School
The CISM Graduate Space Weather Summer School is
a two week intensive program run each summer. It
is aimed at beginning graduate students but has
proved to be equally valuable to others entering
the space weather field in industry, government
or the military. The summer school is routinely
over subscribed and continues to score high in
student evaluations. The summer school is
described in detail in an accompanying poster.

Community
Measures of Success Assessing the Outcomes
Providing undergraduates with research
opportunities is a proven method of engaging and
retaining them in science. Currently 19
undergraduates spread among 6 CISM institutions
are engaged in projects with CISM researchers.
This research experience provides undergraduates
with valuable skills and context for their
academic subjects. To build on and enrich this
experience CISM provides opportunities for
undergraduates to do research during the summer
on a case by case basis. Last year 4
undergraduate students conducted research during
the summer at CISM institutions. In the last 5
years, 8 students who were involved with CISM
projects as undergraduates entered graduate
programs with strong space physics research
groups. We expect at least two more students to
do so in the fall of 2007.

    leveraged. The goals are to provide materials and
    training for grade 6-14 educators and high
    visibility exhibits and information for the
    general public.

Teachers trained in use of CISM curriculum modules (such as the Speace Weather Monitor System) at middle school, high school and community college level. 20 teachers trained per year. Module is in Beta Testing with 2 teachers using it
