Proper apparel is important in the lab
  • 2. Wear safety goggles and lab aprons in the
    laboratory at all times.
  • 3. Shoes are required . No open toed shoes are
    allowed.
  • 4. Do not wear bulky or loose fitting clothes.
  • 5. Dangling jewelry should be removed.
  • 6. Long hair should be pulled back and secured.

Proper procedures are important
  • 7. Do not eat or drink in the lab. Never taste
    chemicals.
  • 8. Wash your hands before and after each lab.
    Never put your hands to your face during a lab.
  • 9. Report all accidents no matter how slight.
  • 10. Leave your work area clean .
  • 11. Know the location of the safety equipment.
  • 12. Notify the teacher of any hazardous
    conditions.

  • 13. Notify your teacher immediately if spills
    occur. This includes liquids and dry chemicals.
  • 14. Broken glass should also be cleaned up
    immediately. Never pick up broken glass with
    your bare hands.
  • 15. Never play practical jokes or horse around
    in the lab.

Handling flames in the lab
  • 16. Never leave burners or hot plates unattended.
  • 17. Never reach over a flame or any substance
    that is being heated.
  • 18. When heating a test tube, turn the mouth of
    the tube away from yourself and others.
  • 19. Check twice to see that gas valves are turned
    off before leaving the lab.

Handling chemicals properly
  • 20. Read the label of a chemical before selecting
    it then again before using the chemical.
  • 21. Do not return extra chemicals back to the
    original container.
  • 22. To smell a chemical gently waft the fumes
    toward your nose.
  • 23. Use a bulb when pipetting a liquid. Never
    mouth pipet.

  • 24. Never look down into a test tube containing
    chemicals.
  • 25. When diluting an acid always add the acid
    slowly to the water.

Using equipment in the lab
  • 26. Use a different spatula, pipet, or dropper
    for each chemical used.
  • 27. Do not use chipped or broken glassware.
  • 28. Check the temperature of heated equipment
    (especially glass) with the back of the hand
    before touching.
  • 29. Never stir with a thermometer.

  • 30. Never assume that glassware is clean. Wash
    it before and after use.
  • 31. When using electrical equipment make sure
    that the equipment, work area, and your hands are
    dry.
  • 32. When pouring corrosive chemicals use a
    stirring rod and have the collection container
    secure on the lab table.

Emergency Procedures
  • 1. Report any injury, accident, or spill to your
    teacher.
  • 2. Know the location of the closest eyewash
    fountain, fire blanket, fire extinguisher, and
    shower.
  • 3. Burns-
  • Immediately flush with cold water until the
    burning sensation subsides.
  • Your lab partner should report the incident to
    the teacher.

  • 4. Fainting-
  • Provide fresh air (for instance open a window).
  • Move the person so the head is lower than the
    rest of the body.
  • If breathing stops use artificial resuscitation.
  • 5. Eye injury-
  • Immediately flush the eye with running water.
  • Contacts should not be worn in the lab if
    possible.

  • 6. Fire-
  • Lab fire.
  • Turn off all gas outlets.
  • Unplug all appliances.
  • Use a fire blanket or extinguisher to smother
    the fire. If not easily extinguished then sound
    fire alarm and exit properly.
  • Individual on fire
  • Person should drop and roll to smother flames
  • Lab partner or individual should use a fire
    blanket to help smother flames. Caution- DO NOT
    CUT OFF THE PERSONS AIR SUPPLY

  • 7. Minor Cuts- Allow to bleed briefly. Wash with
    soap and water.
  • 8. Poisoning- Note what substance was taken and
    alert the teacher immediately.
  • 9. Spills on Skin- Flush with water and notify
    the teacher.
