Understanding Health Risks
  • Risk behaviors-are actions that can potentially
    threaten your health or the health of others.

Teen Risk Behaviors
  • Examples
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol drug use
  • Sexual experimentation
  • Diet
  • Inactivity

Cumulative Risks
  • Are related risks that increase in effect with
    each added risk
  • Example
  • Smoking- 1 cigarette will not result in death but
    over many years can cause cancer and death.
  • Junk Food-1 cheeseburger will not make you fat
    but multiple, over time may lead to obesity and
    other health disorders.

Abstaining from Risk Behaviors
  • Abstinence-avoiding harmful behaviors
  • Many negative consequences can be avoid by
    choosing to avoid items such as alcohol, drugs
    and tobacco. Examples are addiction, bodily
    harm, death, low social interaction, jail.

Abstaining from Sexual Activity
  • Why? So you dont have to worry about
  • Unplanned pregnancy
  • Being a single parent
  • Responsibility of caring for a child
  • STIs
  • Emotional problems-guilt, rejection,
  • regret

Group discussion
  • List as many ways you can to communicate the
    importance of practicing abstinence to other
    teens.
