Now that we have finished reading The Odyssey,
has your opinion of Odysseus changed? What
characteristics or abilities does he have that
make him heroic?
  • Odyssey Journal 8

Morals
  • Morals principles or rules of right conduct or
    the distinction between right and wrong.
  • All people, societies and cultures have their own
    sets of morals. They can differ from person to
    person and culture to culture.
  • Morals are taught by parents, families, religion,
    schools, the media and many other sources.
  • The Ancient Greeks used epics to teach the moral
    values of their society. Children hearing of the
    adventures of Odysseus would also learn moral
    lessons from his adventures.

Odysseuss Heroic Traits
  • Although Odysseus sometimes makes mistakes, in
    each adventure he still shows himself to be a
    worthy hero in some way.
  • For example, in the adventure with the Cyclops,
    he showed great intelligence.

  • In small groups, discuss each of the following
    adventures. What heroic trait does Odysseus show
    in each one?
  • Write your answers in your notebook.
  • Calypso
  • Cyclops
  • The Land of the Dead
  • Sirens
  • Scylla
  • The Cattle of the Sun God
  • The Test of the Great Bow

  • Archetypes
  • The Odyssey has had a great influence on all
    literature. Although it was written so long ago,
    its influence can still be seen in the stories
    that are written today.
  • Many archetypal characters, settings, plot-lines
    and images in modern literature and movies
    originated in The Odyssey.
  • For example, Circe is the archetypal female
    temptress who threatens the success of the make
    hero. Many modern texts have characters who fit
    into this same mould.
  • Another example, Odysseus begins his journey with
    a group of men, but ends it alone. This
    archetype is also seen in modern literature (Lord
    of the Rings)

  • In your small groups, discuss the archetypal
    images in The Odyssey. Be prepared to share
    your ideas with the class.
  • Remember archetypes can be characters, images,
    plot-lines or settings.

  • On your own
  • 1) Choose 1 of Odysseuss adventures
  • 2) Determine the archetype(s) that are present in
    that adventure
  • 3) Determine which heroic trait Odysseus is
    displaying in that adventure.
  • 4) Determine what the moral is in that adventure
  • Write your ideas down in your notebook

  • You will use all of this information to create a
    poster presentation of one of Odysseuss
    adventures. You poster must include the
    following.
  • A piece of art work that depicts the adventure
    (it could be the one you turned in for homework,
    or a different one)
  • The moral of the adventure
  • The archetypes present in the adventure
  • The heroic trait demonstrated by Odysseus in that
    adventure.
  • You will plan what your poster will look like,
    and what text will be on it.

Homework
  • Find a picture to use for your poster. Also,
    bring a poster board if possible.
